The Ontario French Curriculum
Beginning September 2014, French teachers across Ontario began using the new Ontario French as a Second Language Curriculum. There are many positive changes with this new curriculum.
The vision, taken from the Curriculum is:
"Students will communicate and interact with growing confidence in French, on of Canada's official languages, while developing the knowledge, skills, and perspectives they need to participate fully as citizens in Canada and in the world."
(FSL Ontario Curriculum, pg.6).
There is a strong emphasis on Oral Communication and less emphasis on learning specific grammar conventions in a certain grade. Grammar is to be learned more like a first language, in speaking and listening and picking up on the rules, rather than being explicitly taught a certain rule. The new French curriculum also contains Cultural components. Grade 4, 5, and 6 focus on different Francophone communities in Canada.
